7pm DOORS
Multi-instrumentalist and composer, MAE.SUN, also known as Hailey Niswanger, has been deeply connected to music for nearly three decades. Her musical journey began on piano at age 5, then expanded to woodwinds at age 8. Saxophone soon became her biggest obsession, and she won the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz International saxophone competition before graduating high school. Hailey left her hometown of Portland, Oregon, and went on to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, on a full scholarship and received a B.A. in Jazz Performance. After college, Hailey moved to New York City where she continued her professional career and began touring with Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society, joining the The Wolff & Clark Expedition led my pianist Michael Wolff, and drummer Mike Clark, and releasing music and performing as an independent artist. After 7 years in New York, Hailey moved to Los Angeles, CA, where she currently resides. Most recently, Hailey has been touring with the artist Clairo, Headhunters drummer Harvey Mason, and performing with her MAE.SUN project, as well as her duo project with Mia Garcia called OHMA. The duo released their first album Between All Things (2022), and immediately went on an extended tour across North America opening for FKJ. Hailey has also released 3 album under her own name, Confeddie (2009), The Keeper (2012), and PDX Soul (2015), and 2 albums as MAE.SUN, Vol. 1:Inter-be (2017), Vol. 2: Into The Flow (2019). Vol. 3 is set to be released in 2024. Hailey has performed at a number of festivals and venues as a leader including the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, Portland Jazz Festival, Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, Northampton Jazz Festival, Saratoga Jazz Festival, Red Clay Jazz Festival, Salem Jazz Festival, Beaches International Jazz Festival, Elkhart Jazz Festival, Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival, Tri-C Jazz Festival, The Blue Note Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, National Sawdust, among many others. She has performed on NPR’s tiny desk with Karol G, with Demi Lovato on Saturday Night Live, with Incubus at The Hollywood Bowl, and noise pop duo Sleigh Bells on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and the Late Show with David Letterman. Hailey has been listed among the DownBeat critics poll for rising star on alto and soprano saxophone for the past ten consecutive years. She has been reviewed in The Wall Street Journal, NPR, JazzTimes, Jazziz and Downbeat, and charted on Billboard. Hailey has recorded for many prominent artists, including playing flute on Terri Lyne Carrington's GRAMMY award winning album, The Mosaic Project, as well as on GRAMMY award winning song ‘Black Parade’ by Beyonce.

Through my compositions and arrangements, I explore the rich tapestry of Black American Music including Brooklyn’s rich Caribbean heritage, blending feel-good melodies, improvisation, rap, and electronic elements to create a sound that is both reflective and revolutionary.”

NIKARA PRESENTS BLACK WALL STREET explores the rich tapestry of Black American Music including Brooklyn’s Caribbean heritage, blending feel-good melodies, improvisation, rap, and electronic elements to create a sound that is both reflective and revolutionary.
Vibraphonist, composer, arranger, and educator NIKARA WARREN is a Brooklynite, born and raised. Granddaughter of world-renowned jazz pianist Kenny Barron, daughter of a half Trinidadian soca/dancehall lover father and a classic 90s “Brooklyn ’Round the Way” girl mother, Warren is taking vibes to the people with her infectious compositional sense, her post-modern patchwork of influences and cultural signposts, and her fearless musicality. Her quest comes from being well-versed in the vibraphone lineage, but seeking to adventure beyond it. Music critic Kira Grunenberg writes that NIKARA presents Black Wall Street “doesn’t project its versatility and creative range through scholarly jazz arrangements or covers chasing perfectionism. Instead, it offers original music converged around a stylistically fluid foundation.”

Toshi Reagon's Songs of the Living: Freedom Songs In conjunction with Carl Hancock Rux's 2024 Juneteenth Celebration (ft. J.Hoard)
Over the past several years, the ever-expansive singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon has explored questions of fellowship and activism with Lincoln Center programs that have united professional singers with audience members through shared performance, most notably in her innovative and participatory opera based on the work of author Octavia Butler, The Parable of the Sower. Reagon's program this year is a continuation of her Songs of the Living Community Choir project, and the Parable Path. This iteration of Songs of the Living is centered on freedom songs: drawing from 200 years of Black Music in collaboration with music across the global African Diaspora. This Juneteenth concert will be rooted in music Toshi learned as a child growing up during the Southern Freedom Movement which expanded into the 20th century American Civil Rights Movement and other revolutions in international human history. Reagon's multitudinous and intergenerational choir is supported by her band BIGLovely and joined by an array of special guests to be announced. It is a collaborative concert that first and foremost acknowledges the ongoing fight for justice and equality that is our necessary struggle and birthright.

HOPE AGAINST HOPE: A Weekend of Community (ft. Nikara Warren) presented by CARA, The Blacksmiths, and NYC Aids Memorial
This two-day program of community, song, conversation, and food is catalyzed by artist Ines Doujak’s decades-spanning practice. Doujak’s work stages interventions into socially prescribed boundaries. In HOPE AGAINST HOPE sculptures and costumes move from display to play, asserting presences on the street, honoring women land defenders, anti-capitalist environmental movements, and the intersections between struggles for liberation across class, race, and gender.
HOPE AGAINST HOPE extends beyond the individual artist’s practice and invites feminist poets, activists, musicians, and more to raise questions about how activist histories can inform radical presents. The weekend begins with a parade on May 4 at 2pm, co-presented by CARA and New York City AIDS Memorial. Weaving together pasts and futures of hope, participants form a chorus of voices calling for liberation from patriarchal oppression.
The parade opens at CARA with an invocation by poet Pamela Sneed, who will read work that honors the lives lost to AIDS through mourning and action. Her words will lead us into the streets, guided by the heart-beat of the parade: the percussion of Black-led, Afro Brazilian, all-women musical troupe Batalá New York. Joined by Brujas, a New York-based experimental union and skate collective, we will process towards St. Vincent’s Triangle (the New York City AIDS Memorial), which will act as a space for performances and gathering. At the memorial four artists from The Blacksmiths, a coalition of artists and organizers committed to using the arts to support direct action and civic engagement in the service of Black liberation and equity, will perform with vibraphone, trumpet, vocals, and percussion. Artist and writer Christen Clifford, whose work centers reproductive justice and organizing against gender-based violence, will perform. Free food will be available as an invitation for collective nourishment. The afternoon will be book-ended by a final offering from Sneed to close out the day.
Saturday, May 4, 2-5PM
Co-presented with New York City AIDS Memorial

About this event
—— TIX AVAILABLE HERE ——
MAE.SUN, alternately known as Hailey Niswanger, is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer. In 2016, Hailey started branching out from her jazz roots, and through meditation, began to channel music that was inspired by a multitude of influences and sounds. “My music started to come from a place that felt so much more than just ‘me’. I wanted to depart from my birth given name, and put music out under a new moniker. MAE is my middle name, and SUN, was chosen from inspiring words by Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, who said, “The sun is our second heart…[the] great heart outside of our body.” Essentially, our universal, collective heart. MAE.SUN’s music is mindful and eclectic, pushing boundaries and defying genres. Her music taps into the collective consciousness, serving as an engaging mediation for all. Though she can be primarily heard playing her saxophones, flute, and singing, MAE.SUN also plays clarinet, piano, and guitar. MAE.SUN’s cosmic debut album ‘Vol. 1: Inter-be’ was released in 2017, followed by ‘Vol. 2: Into The Flow’ in 2019. Vol. 3 is set to be released in 2023.
Before 2016, Hailey recorded 3 albums under her original name, and received many accolades in the jazz community; including winning first place at the Mary Lou Williams saxophone competition at age 19, charting on Billboard, plaudits from esteemed writer Nat Hentoff in the Wall Street Journal, rave reviews in JazzTimes, Jazziz, NPR, and DownBeat, including being listed on their critics poll for rising star on alto and soprano saxophone for the 9 consecutive years. She has toured and performed with a number of notable artists including, Esperanza Spalding, Kenny Barron, Harvey Mason, Wolff & Clark Expedition, Mulatu Astatke, Ralph Peterson, and Terri Lyne Carrington whose GRAMMY award winning album ‘The Mosaic Project’ she recorded flute on. In the pop realm, she has performed with Demi Lovato, Sleigh Bells, and can be heard playing flute on Beyoncé’s ‘Black Parade’. Most recently Hailey has been touring with pop/folk artist Clairo.
MAE.SUN has performed at notable venues including SFJAZZ Center, PDX Jazz at Lan Su Gardens, Music Hall of Williamsburg, National Sawdust, Mercury Lounge, Elsewhere, and Bowery Electric. MAE.SUN has also performed at BRIC Jazz Fest, San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, and New York’s Winter Jazz Fest. She performed a live set on WBGO’s The Checkout, and most recently was the featured demo performer for Roland’s new Aerophone Pro. Hailey can also be heard in collaboration with Mia Garcia as part of their newest project OHMA. Their first album ‘Between All Things’ was released September 2022, and they just completed their first tour opening for FKJ across North America.
